The LM317DCYRG4 from Texas Instruments is an adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulator capable of supplying 1.5A over an output voltage range of 1.25V to 37V. It requires only two external resistors to set the output voltage, making it exceptionally easy to use. The device features excellent line regulation of 0.01%/V and load regulation of 0.1%, with 80dB ripple rejection for clean output. The internal reference voltage of 1.25V +/-1% ensures accurate output setting. Current limiting and thermal shutdown protect the device under fault conditions. The floating design allows the regulator to be used in high-voltage applications where the regulator operates as a voltage difference device. The LM317DCYRG4 is available in a SOT-223 surface-mount package rated for 0 to 125 C operation.

The LM317DCYRG4 operates as a floating adjustable voltage regulator using a 1.25V reference. Key subsystems include: (1) Bandgap Reference – a precision 1.25V reference between the OUT and ADJ pins sets the minimum output voltage; (2) Error Amplifier – compares the voltage at the ADJ pin with the internal reference and drives the series pass transistor; (3) Series Pass Transistor – an NPN Darlington provides up to 1.5A output current; (4) Current Limiting – internal circuitry monitors output current and limits to a safe value, relatively constant over temperature; (5) Thermal Shutdown – monitors junction temperature and shuts down the pass transistor when exceeding safe limits; (6) Output Setting – the output voltage is determined by VOUT = 1.25V x (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ x R2.
