The LM293DR from Texas Instruments is a dual differential comparator designed for operation from a single 2 V to 36 V supply or dual +/-1 V to +/-18 V supplies. The device features low 1 mV typical input offset voltage and fast 1.3 us response time, making it suitable for precision voltage comparison applications. The open-collector outputs allow wire-OR connection and interface with logic families from 5 V to 36 V. The input common-mode voltage range includes ground, enabling single-supply operation without level shifting. The LM293 is the industrial temperature grade of the popular LM393/LM293/LM393 family.

The LM293DR contains two independent voltage comparators. Each comparator has inverting (-) and non-inverting (+) inputs and an open-collector output. When the voltage at the non-inverting input exceeds the voltage at the inverting input, the output transistor turns off, and the output goes HIGH (determined by the external pull-up resistor). When the inverting input voltage exceeds the non-inverting input, the output transistor turns on, pulling the output LOW. The open-collector output configuration allows the output to sink up to 16 mA and enables wire-OR connections where multiple comparator outputs share a single pull-up resistor. The input stage uses PNP transistors, allowing the common-mode input range to extend to ground (0 V) for single-supply operation.
