The LM2936MP-5.0 from Texas Instruments is a 50mA low-dropout voltage regulator with a fixed 5.0V output in a SOT-223 package. The device operates from 5.3V to 40V input, providing automotive load dump protection. The ultra-low 15uA typical quiescent current makes it ideal for always-on battery-powered systems where standby current must be minimized. Dropout voltage is 200mV typical at 50mA load. The device features reverse battery protection, 60V load dump protection, and thermal shutdown. The -40C to +125C operating temperature range supports automotive and industrial environments. The SOT-223 package provides a small footprint with good thermal performance.

The LM2936MP-5.0 uses a PNP pass transistor in a low-dropout configuration. (1) Pass Element: A PNP transistor allows the input-to-output voltage differential to be as low as 200mV while maintaining regulation, compared to 2V for standard NPN regulators. (2) Low Iq: The bias circuitry is designed to minimize quiescent current to 15uA typical, which remains relatively constant over the full load range. This is critical for always-on automotive applications. (3) Protection: Reverse battery protection prevents damage when the input voltage is reversed. Internal thermal shutdown disables the output when junction temperature exceeds approximately 160C. (4) Load Dump: The device withstands 60V transient input voltage from automotive load dump events without damage.
