The Texas Instruments LM2675MX-5.0 is a member of the SIMPLE SWITCHER family, providing a complete 1A step-down voltage regulator solution in a SOIC-8 package. It converts input voltages from 6.5V to 40V to a precise 5.0V output using a fixed 260 kHz switching frequency and an integrated DMOS power switch. The design requires only four external components: input capacitor, output capacitor, bootstrap capacitor, and inductor, significantly simplifying the BOM and PCB layout compared to controllers requiring external MOSFETs and compensation networks. The device achieves up to 96% efficiency through the low RDS(ON) of the integrated DMOS switch and optimized current-mode control. Internal protection includes cycle-by-cycle current limiting and thermal shutdown with automatic recovery.

The LM2675MX-5.0 uses a current-mode PWM buck converter topology with an integrated N-channel DMOS power switch. During the switch on-time, the DMOS transistor connects the input voltage (VIN) to the inductor through the SW pin, causing inductor current to ramp up linearly. During the off-time, the DMOS switch turns off and the inductor current freewheels through an external Schottky catch diode to ground, causing the inductor current to ramp down. The current-mode control loop senses the switch current through an internal sense resistor and compares it to an error amplifier output that represents the difference between the output voltage and the 5.0V internal reference. The 260 kHz fixed switching frequency sets the inductor and capacitor values, and the current-mode architecture provides inherent input voltage feedforward for good line transient response. The bootstrap capacitor (CBOOT) between the CBOOT and SW pins provides gate drive voltage above VIN for the high-side DMOS switch. Current limiting is achieved by clamping the peak switch current on a cycle-by-cycle basis, while thermal shutdown disables switching when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 180°C.
