The LM2674MX-5.0/NOPB is a Texas Instruments SIMPLE SWITCHER series monolithic step-down switching voltage regulator with a fixed 5V output, capable of driving 500mA loads with excellent line and load regulation. Built with a LMDMOS process, the device integrates a 0.25Ω DMOS output switch, 260kHz fixed-frequency oscillator, and patented internal frequency compensation, requiring only five external components (input capacitor, output capacitor, bootstrap capacitor, catch diode, and inductor). The 8V to 40V input range supports 12V and 24V industrial rails. The ±1.5% output voltage tolerance over line and load conditions ensures reliable 5V logic supply. Efficiency exceeds 90% at moderate loads, allowing the PCB copper traces to serve as the only heat sinking required. The 260kHz switching frequency enables smaller inductor and capacitor values than lower-frequency designs. The NOPB suffix indicates Pb-free (lead-free) finish. The MX suffix denotes SOIC-8 package with 2500-unit large tape-and-reel. TTL-compatible shutdown provides 50µA standby current. Thermal shutdown and current limit protect under fault conditions.

The LM2674 operates as a fixed-frequency, current-mode buck converter. The internal 260kHz oscillator sets the switching period. During each on-time, the DMOS switch connects the input voltage to the inductor, causing the inductor current to ramp up linearly. The current-mode control loop compares the peak inductor current with the error amplifier output to determine the switch on-time. When the switch turns off, the inductor current flows through the external catch diode to the output. The patented active inductor and active capacitor internal compensation networks provide stability without requiring external compensation components. The 0.25Ω DMOS switch minimizes conduction losses. Current limiting is implemented by clamping the peak switch current. Thermal shutdown disables the switch when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 175°C.
