The LM2596S-ADJ is the adjustable output version of TI’s SIMPLE SWITCHER step-down regulator family in a TO-263-5 package. Operating from 4.5V to 40V input, it delivers up to 3A at 150kHz with output voltage programmed by two external resistors from 1.23V to 37V. Only five external components are required. Internal frequency compensation, thermal shutdown, and current limiting simplify design. The ON/OFF pin enables shutdown with 50uA standby current. The adjustable version provides maximum flexibility for custom voltage rails, battery chargers, and LED drivers.

The LM2596S-ADJ operates as a 150kHz fixed-frequency current-mode buck converter. The internal NPN Darlington power switch connects VIN to the inductor when ON, storing energy. When OFF, the external Schottky catch diode conducts for freewheeling. The FB pin senses the output via an external resistor divider (R1 top, R2 bottom). The error amplifier compares FB voltage with the internal 1.23V reference and adjusts duty cycle. VOUT = 1.23V x (1 + R1/R2). Current-mode control provides fast transient response and inherent current limiting. The ON/OFF pin disables the oscillator when pulled below 1.3V.
