The INA168QDBVRQ1 from Texas Instruments is an AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified high-side current shunt monitor that measures voltage across a shunt resistor and provides a proportional output current. The device operates with a common-mode voltage range of 2.7V to 60V, independent of the supply voltage, making it ideal for automotive 12V and 48V battery systems. The 0.5% maximum gain error and 100 dB minimum CMRR provide precise current measurement even in noisy environments. The current-output architecture allows the gain to be set with a single external resistor, and the output can drive long traces without voltage drop concerns. The 60 uA quiescent current minimizes battery drain in always-on applications. The 800 kHz bandwidth at G=100 supports motor control and switching power supply current sensing.

The INA168QDBVRQ1 uses a precision difference amplifier to measure the small voltage drop across an external shunt resistor placed between the power supply and the load (high-side sensing). The input stage handles common-mode voltages from 2.7V to 60V while amplifying the differential shunt voltage. The internal amplifier drives a current output that is proportional to the sensed shunt voltage: IOUT = (VSENSE / 5kOhm) where VSENSE is the voltage across the shunt. An external load resistor (RL) converts this output current to a ground-referenced voltage: VOUT = IOUT x RL. The gain is therefore: G = RL / 5kOhm. This current-output architecture provides inherent noise immunity for long PCB traces, as the output voltage is developed locally at the ADC. The 100 dB CMRR ensures that common-mode voltage fluctuations (such as from battery transients) do not affect the measurement accuracy. The internal reference current source sets the 5kOhm transconductance factor.
