The ICM7555IPA from NXP Semiconductors is a CMOS version of the classic 555 timer that provides significantly improved performance over the bipolar NE555. Key improvements include 80uA supply current (vs 3mA for NE555), 20pA trigger and threshold input currents (vs 100nA), 500kHz maximum oscillation frequency (vs 100kHz), and rail-to-rail output swing. The CMOS design eliminates the supply current crowbarring that occurs during NE555 output transitions, and the CONTROL VOLTAGE pin does not require a bypass capacitor. These features make the ICM7555 ideal for battery-powered and precision timing applications.

The ICM7555 uses CMOS comparators and a CMOS flip-flop instead of bipolar equivalents. Two comparators monitor the THRESHOLD and TRIGGER pins against internal voltage dividers at 2/3 VDD and 1/3 VDD respectively. In monostable mode, a trigger pulse below 1/3 VDD sets the flip-flop, driving the output high and releasing the discharge transistor. The timing capacitor charges through the external resistor until it reaches 2/3 VDD, which resets the flip-flop. In astable mode, the capacitor charges and discharges between 1/3 and 2/3 VDD through external resistors. The CMOS output stage swings rail-to-rail, unlike the NE555 which drops 1.5-2.5V from the rails.
