The HDC2010YPA from Texas Instruments is a high-accuracy digital humidity and temperature sensor in an ultra-compact 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.5 mm WLCSP (Wafer-Level Chip-Scale Package). The +/-2% RH humidity accuracy and +/-0.2C temperature accuracy exceed the requirements for HVAC, weather stations, and industrial monitoring. The 550 nA current consumption at 1 Hz measurement rate makes it suitable for battery-powered wearables and IoT sensors that can run for years on a coin cell. The 14-bit resolution for both humidity and temperature provides fine-grained measurements. The I2C interface supports up to 400 kHz for fast data readout. The WLCSP package is the smallest available for a humidity sensor, enabling integration into space-constrained designs like smartwatches and earbuds.

The HDC2010YPA uses a capacitive sensing element for humidity and a bandgap temperature sensor. The humidity sensor consists of a polymer dielectric between two electrodes. Water vapor absorption changes the polymer’s dielectric constant, altering the capacitance. A precision capacitance-to-digital converter measures this change with 14-bit resolution. The temperature sensor uses a bandgap reference circuit that generates a PTAT (Proportional To Absolute Temperature) voltage, digitized by the same ADC. Both measurements are performed sequentially in a single conversion cycle. The 550 nA low current is achieved by duty-cycling: the sensor wakes from sleep, performs a measurement (which takes approximately 6 ms at 14-bit resolution), and returns to sleep until the next measurement cycle. The auto-measurement mode allows the device to perform periodic measurements independently, storing results in data registers and optionally asserting an interrupt when data is ready or when readings exceed programmable thresholds.
