The HCNR200-000E from Broadcom (formerly Avago) is a high-linearity analog optocoupler consisting of a high-performance AlGaAs LED that illuminates two closely matched photodiodes. The input photodiode (PD1) monitors and stabilizes the LED light output, virtually eliminating LED nonlinearity and drift. The output photodiode (PD2) produces a photocurrent linearly related to the LED output. The close photodiode matching ensures 0.01% nonlinearity and +/-15% transfer gain (K3 = IPD2/IPD1). The 65 ppm/C gain temperature coefficient provides excellent stability over temperature. The device supports flexible circuit configurations including unipolar/bipolar, AC/DC, and inverting/non-inverting modes. The 5000Vrms isolation rating meets UL 1577 and IEC 60747-5-5 safety standards. The 000E option denotes the standard DIP-8 through-hole package with 0.400-inch row spacing.

The HCNR200-000E uses a servo feedback architecture to achieve high linearity analog isolation. (1) Dual Photodiode Servo: The AlGaAs LED illuminates two photodiodes (PD1 and PD2). An input-side op-amp drives the LED current such that PD1’s photocurrent matches the input signal current. Since PD1 monitors the LED output in real time, any LED nonlinearity or drift is automatically compensated by the servo loop. (2) Transfer Gain: The output photocurrent from PD2 is proportional to PD1’s photocurrent by the ratio K3 = IPD2/IPD1. For the HCNR200, K3 = 1.0 +/-15%. The HCNR201 offers tighter K3 tolerance (+/-5%). (3) Isolation: The optical path between the LED and PD2 provides galvanic isolation rated at 5000Vrms. The DIP-8 package ensures adequate creepage and clearance for this isolation rating. (4) Flexibility: External circuit configuration determines the operating mode. For unipolar operation, a single op-amp servo drives the LED. For bipolar operation, two optocouplers or a center-biased circuit can handle signals of both polarities.
