The ESD5Z6.0T1G from onsemi is a bidirectional ESD protection diode in a compact SOD-523 surface-mount package. The 6.0 in the part number indicates the minimum breakdown voltage of 6.0V, suitable for protecting 5V signal lines. The T1G suffix denotes the SOD-523 package with tape and reel packaging. The ESD5Z6.0T1G operates through bidirectional avalanche clamping: (1) Normal Operation: When the signal line voltage is within the working voltage range (-5V to +5V for bidirectional), the internal avalanche diode structure presents a high impedance with less than 0.1uA leakage current and 0.5pF capacitance. This makes the device effectively invisible to the protected circuit during normal operation. (2) ESD Clamping: When an electrostatic discharge event exceeds the breakdown voltage (6.0V minimum) in either direction, the internal avalanche diode conducts within picoseconds, diverting the ESD current to ground. The device is rated to IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 with +/-30kV air discharge and +/-8kV contact discharge capability. The 9.8V maximum clamping voltage at 1A ensures the protected IC sees a limited voltage excursion. (3) Bidirectional Protection: The symmetrical construction provides equal protection for positive and negative transients, making it ideal for AC-coupled or bidirectional signal lines.
