The ESD1014MUTAG uses a steering (rail-to-rail) TVS diode topology with four bidirectional channels. In normal operation, the diode array presents only its low junction capacitance (3.8 pF I/O to GND, 1.5 pF line-to-line) to the protected data lines, which is negligible at data rates up to several GHz and does not degrade signal integrity or eye diagram quality. When an ESD or surge event occurs on any protected line, the corresponding TVS diode rapidly avalanches and conducts the transient current to the GND rail, clamping the voltage to a safe level (7.5 V at 1 A, 11 V at 25 A). The steering diodes also clamp line-to-line transients, protecting differential pairs. The low clamping voltage ensures the protected IC input never exceeds its absolute maximum rating. The device responds in sub-nanosecond time, fast enough to clamp IEC 61000-4-2 ESD strikes. The 450 W peak pulse power rating (8/20 us waveform) also provides protection against electrical fast transient (EFT) and lightning-induced surges per IEC 61000-4-4 and 61000-4-5.
