The EPCQ16A stores the FPGA configuration bitstream in non-volatile Flash memory. During power-up, the Intel FPGA initiates configuration by driving the AS interface — the FPGA acts as the master, providing clock (DCLK) and reading data from the EPCQ. In AS x1 mode, 1 bit per clock is read; in AS x4 mode, 4 bits per clock are read for 4x faster configuration. The EPCQ also supports ISP: the FPGA can reprogram the EPCQ through the JTAG interface using Intel’s Quartus Programmer software. The write-protection feature uses status register bits (BP[3:0] and TB) to define protected sectors, preventing accidental corruption of critical configuration data. The 4KB subsector erase allows efficient partial updates without erasing the entire device.
