The EP53F8QI from Intel Enpirion is a 1500mA PowerSoC synchronous buck DC-DC converter with an integrated inductor, MOSFET switches, and compensation in a 3x3x1.1mm 16-pin QFN package. The QI suffix denotes the QFN package with industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C). By integrating the inductor, the EP53F8QI achieves a total solution footprint as small as 40mm2 with only two external capacitors and a resistor divider. The 4MHz fixed switching frequency enables small external capacitors while the integrated inductor minimizes radiated and conducted EMI, making it ideal for noise-sensitive RF and high-speed applications. The output voltage is programmed via an external resistor divider with a 0.6V reference.

The EP53F8QI operates through four subsystems: (1) Integrated Power Stage: A synchronous buck converter with integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs and a custom thin-film inductor. The 4MHz switching frequency reduces the required inductance value, enabling integration into the QFN package. (2) Voltage-Mode PWM Control: A voltage-mode pulse-width modulation controller with internal type-III compensation. The feedback voltage (VFB) is compared against a 0.6V reference. The output voltage is set by a resistor divider: VOUT = 0.6V x (1 + Ra/Rb). The upper resistor Ra should be 237kOhm for optimal loop response. (3) Power OK (POK): An open-drain output that pulls low when the output voltage falls below 90% of the set value, providing power-good status to the system. (4) Protection: Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) disables the converter when VIN drops below 2.2V. Over-current protection (OCP) limits the inductor current cycle-by-cycle. Thermal shutdown disables the converter at 155C junction temperature with 15C hysteresis.
