The DS1337S+T&R from Analog Devices (Maxim) is a low-cost I2C real-time clock providing seconds through century calendar with two programmable time-of-day alarms. The on-chip trickle charger simplifies backup battery management, while the 500nA battery-backup current maximizes battery life. The T&R suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging. Operates from 1.8V to 5.5V with automatic VCC/VBAT power switching.

The DS1337 uses an external 32.768kHz crystal for timekeeping. An internal oscillator divides the crystal frequency to 1Hz for clock counting. The I2C interface provides read/write access to time, alarm, and control registers. When VCC drops below VBAT, the power-switch circuit automatically connects VBAT to the oscillator and timekeeping logic, maintaining clock operation with minimal current draw.
