The DP83620SQ from Texas Instruments is a precision PHYTER 10/100 Ethernet PHY transceiver with IEEE 1588-2002 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) hardware timestamping. The device provides sub-8ns timestamp accuracy for both transmit and receive packets, enabling precise time synchronization in distributed measurement, automation, and telecom systems. The timestamping engine supports both Layer 1 (physical layer) and Layer 2 event message timestamping. Standard features include MII/RMII MAC interface, auto-negotiation, auto-MDIX, cable diagnostics, and loopback testing. The device operates from 3.3V with 2.5V or 3.3V I/O compatibility.

The DP83620SQ integrates a 10/100 Ethernet PHY with a precision IEEE 1588 timestamping engine. (1) Ethernet PHY: Standard 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX transceiver with auto-negotiation and auto-MDIX, handling physical layer encoding/decoding and line driving/receiving. (2) IEEE 1588 Timestamp: A hardware timestamp counter (TSC) runs at the local clock frequency. When a PTP event message is detected (SOF or EOF), the current TSC value is captured with sub-8ns accuracy. The timestamp is stored in dedicated registers accessible via the MII management interface. (3) Clock Synchronization: The device supports both coarse and servo-assisted fine timestamp adjustment. An external 1PPS input/output allows synchronization to GPS or atomic clock references. (4) Correction: The timestamp correction register compensates for cable delay, PHY latency, and other systematic offsets.
