The Silicon Labs CP2102N-A01-GQFN28 is a highly integrated USB-to-UART bridge controller that provides a seamless connection between a USB host and a UART serial port with no external crystal or EEPROM required. The device integrates a full-speed USB 2.0 transceiver, USB voltage regulator, clock generator, and programmable EEPROM in a single 4 x 4 mm QFN-28 package. The CP2102N supports data rates from 300 bps to 3 Mbps, covering the full range of standard UART baud rates. The configurable GPIO pins (up to 4) can be assigned as modem control signals (RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI) or as general-purpose I/O controlled through the USB API. The integrated 1024-byte programmable EEPROM stores USB Vendor ID (VID), Product ID (PID), serial number, and device description strings—enabling custom device identification without external memory. The device supports USB suspend and resume with remote wake-up capability, and the automatic RS-485 bias generation simplifies half-duplex RS-485 network connections. The CP2102N includes a complete USB device driver stack with WHQL-certified drivers for Windows, built-in CDC-ACM driver support for Linux and macOS, and virtual COM port (VCP) drivers that present the USB connection as a standard COM port to application software—no custom USB driver development required.

The CP2102N operates as a USB device implementing the USB Communications Device Class (CDC) Abstract Control Model (ACM). When connected to a USB host, the device enumerates using the VID/PID stored in its internal EEPROM (or the default Silicon Labs VID if the EEPROM is unprogrammed). The VCP driver on the host translates standard serial API calls (open, read, write, set baud rate, etc.) into USB control and bulk transfers that are received by the CP2102N. The CP2102N firmware converts the USB data packets into UART serial data on the TXD/RXD pins at the configured baud rate. The baud rate is generated by an internal fractional baud rate generator that can synthesize any standard or custom baud rate from 300 bps to 3 Mbps with less than 1% error—critical for reliable communication with UART peripherals. The GPIO pins are controlled via USB vendor-specific commands from the host, and their state is preserved across USB suspend/resume cycles. The RS-485 half-duplex control automatically deasserts the RS-485 driver enable signal after the last stop bit of the transmitted data, preventing bus contention without requiring precise timing from the host. The integrated voltage regulator derives 3.3V from the USB 5V VBUS supply, providing the device operating voltage and optionally supplying up to 100 mA to external circuitry.
