The Johnson counter (twisted-ring) configuration ensures that only one output is active at a time and that the decoded outputs are spike-free, unlike binary counter + decoder combinations. The Schmitt trigger on the clock input provides pulse shaping, allowing unlimited clock rise and fall times—no need for a clean square wave. The CLOCK INHIBIT pin (active HIGH) pauses counting without losing the current state. The RESET pin (active HIGH) immediately forces Q0 HIGH and all other outputs LOW. The CARRY-OUT output goes HIGH for the first 5 clock cycles (Q0-Q4 active) and LOW for the next 5 cycles (Q5-Q9 active), providing a symmetrical 50% duty cycle output at 1/10th the clock frequency.
