The BTA16-800BWRG from STMicroelectronics is a 16A RMS snubberless triac rated at 800V in an insulated TO-220AB package. The snubberless (3-quadrant) design eliminates the need for an external RC snubber network even when driving inductive loads such as motors and transformers, thanks to the high 1500 V/us minimum dV/dt immunity. The BTA prefix indicates the package tab is electrically isolated from the triac terminals by an internal ceramic pad, providing 2500Vrms isolation rated per UL standards. This allows the heatsink to be grounded without an additional mica insulator, simplifying assembly. The 800V blocking voltage provides margin for 230VAC line operation with transient overvoltage. The 50mA gate trigger current is compatible with most optocoupler drivers. The BW suffix denotes 50mA standard gate sensitivity with snubberless capability. The RG suffix indicates tube packaging.

The BTA16-800BWRG is a bidirectional thyristor (triac) that can conduct current in both directions when triggered by a gate current. Unlike standard 4-quadrant triacs, the snubberless 3-quadrant triac is designed to not trigger in quadrant 4 (negative MT2 voltage, positive gate current), which eliminates the most commutation-sensitive quadrant. This design dramatically improves the dV/dt immunity from the typical 10-50 V/us of standard triacs to 1500 V/us minimum, removing the need for an external snubber RC network across MT1-MT2. When a gate trigger current (50mA max) is applied, the triac latches on and conducts until the holding current (50mA max) drops below the threshold at the AC zero-crossing. The triac then blocks until the next gate trigger. For inductive loads, the current lags the voltage, causing a rapid dV/dt across the triac at turn-off. The snubberless design’s high dV/dt immunity prevents false triggering from this commutation transient. The internal ceramic pad between the die and the copper tab provides electrical isolation while maintaining good thermal conductivity (Rth(j-c) = 2.0 C/W).
