The BQ2057TTS from Texas Instruments is a compact linear battery charger for single or two-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries in a SOT-23-5 package. The device implements a complete CC/CV charging algorithm with preconditioning for deeply depleted cells, constant-current fast charge, constant-voltage top-off, and minimum current termination. The charge voltage is selectable between 4.1V and 4.2V per cell via the CEL pin, supporting both coke and graphite anode Li-Ion chemistries. The charge current is set by an external sense resistor between the VCC and SNS pins, allowing flexible current programming from a few mA to several hundred mA depending on the thermal constraints of the application. The TS pin accepts an NTC thermistor input to suspend charging when the battery temperature is outside the safe charging range (0C to 45C typical), preventing damage from charging at extreme temperatures. Precharge conditioning applies a reduced current (typically 10% of fast charge current) when the battery voltage is below the preconditioning threshold (2.5V per cell typical), safely recovering deeply discharged cells. After full charge termination, the device automatically restarts charging when the battery voltage falls below the recharge threshold, maintaining the battery at full capacity.

The BQ2057TTS uses a linear regulator topology for battery charging. (1) Linear Regulator: The internal P-channel MOSFET pass element regulates the charge current and voltage by controlling the voltage drop between the input and the battery. The charge current is sensed through an external resistor between VCC and SNS. The voltage across this resistor is compared to an internal reference to regulate the charge current. (2) CC Phase: When the battery voltage is below the regulation threshold, the charger operates in constant-current mode, regulating the charge current at the programmed value. (3) CV Phase: When the battery voltage reaches the regulation threshold (4.1V or 4.2V per cell), the charger transitions to constant-voltage mode, regulating the battery voltage while the charge current naturally tapers as the battery reaches full charge. (4) Termination: When the charge current drops below the minimum current threshold (typically 10% of programmed current), charging is terminated. (5) Temperature Monitor: The TS pin measures the NTC thermistor resistance. If the resistance indicates a temperature outside the 0C-45C window, charging is suspended until the temperature returns to the safe range.
