The BMA400 from Bosch Sensortec is an ultra-low power 12-bit 3-axis accelerometer consuming only 14.5uA at highest performance, with built-in step counter, activity recognition, and 1KB FIFO in a 2x2mm LGA package.

The BMA400 uses a capacitive MEMS sensing element where a proof mass suspended by silicon springs moves relative to fixed electrodes under acceleration. The change in capacitance is converted to a digital value by a sigma-delta ADC. The integrated DSP performs offset compensation, filtering, and feature detection (step counting, activity recognition, tap detection). The auto-wakeup mode periodically enables the sensor to check for motion events while consuming only 800nA average current.
