The device uses a PNP transistor power stage to regulate the LED drive current, which is preset to 20 mA without external components and can be adjusted up to 60 mA by adding an external resistor. Operating from a supply voltage range of 1.2 V to 18 V, the device is versatile enough to drive single or multiple LEDs in series. The voltage drop across the driver is only 0.75 V, maximizing the voltage available for LEDs. PWM dimming is supported through an external transistor connected to the driver’s control input, enabling smooth brightness control. The BCR402WH6327XTSA1 operates as a constant current linear regulator using a PNP transistor power stage. The internal reference and current sense circuitry maintain a fixed LED current of 20 mA by default. An external resistor connected between the ISET pin and ground adjusts the current setpoint up to 60 mA. The PNP transistor operates in its linear region, dropping excess voltage between the supply and the LED string while maintaining constant current flow. The 0.75 V drop across the driver is the minimum headroom required for proper regulation. PWM dimming is achieved by driving an external NPN transistor at the EN (enable) input, which toggles the driver output on and off at the PWM frequency. The negative thermal coefficient is inherent in the PNP transistor’s base-emitter voltage characteristic: as temperature rises, VBE decreases, which reduces the reference current and consequently the LED current, providing automatic thermal derating.
