The ATMEGA32L-8AU is a low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller from Microchip Technology featuring 32 kB of in-system programmable flash with read-while-write capability, 1 kB EEPROM, and 2 kB internal SRAM. Based on the AVR enhanced RISC architecture, it executes most instructions in a single clock cycle, achieving throughputs approaching 1 MIPS per MHz at 8 MHz. The device integrates an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, a programmable USART, Master/Slave SPI serial interface, and a Two-wire serial interface (I2C compatible). A JTAG interface provides access to on-chip debugging and boundary-scan capabilities. Five power saving modes (Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, and Standby) minimize power consumption in battery-operated applications. The low-voltage ‘L’ variant operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V at up to 8 MHz.

The ATMEGA32L-8AU is based on the AVR enhanced RISC Harvard architecture with separate instruction and data memories. (1) CPU Core: A two-stage pipeline (fetch/execute) achieves single-cycle instruction execution for most operations. 32 x 8-bit general purpose registers are directly connected to the ALU, allowing two registers to be accessed in one instruction cycle. (2) Memory Subsystem: 32 kB flash stores program code with ISP capability via SPI. 2 kB SRAM provides data storage, and 1 kB EEPROM offers non-volatile data retention with 100,000 write/erase cycle endurance. (3) Peripheral Subsystem: Three timer/counters (two 8-bit, one 16-bit) provide PWM generation, input capture, and output compare functions. The 10-bit SAR ADC converts analog inputs in 65-260 μs. Communication peripherals include USART with hardware flow control, SPI at up to 4 MHz, and I2C at up to 400 kHz. (4) Power Management: Five sleep modes trade off functionality versus power consumption. Power-down mode halts the CPU and peripherals, retaining only EEPROM and register contents, consuming less than 1 μA.
