The ATMEGA128-16AU from Microchip Technology is a high-performance 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 128KB in-system programmable Flash, 4KB EEPROM, and 4KB SRAM in a TQFP-64 package. The AVR core executes most instructions in a single clock cycle, providing up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16MHz. The device features 53 programmable I/O lines, dual USART, SPI, I2C (TWI), 10-bit 8-channel ADC, two 8-bit and two 16-bit timers with PWM, watchdog timer, and analog comparator. Programming and debugging are supported via JTAG and debugWIRE interfaces. The device supports 10,000 Flash write/erase cycles and 100-year data retention at 85C.

The ATMEGA128-16AU uses the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 133 instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle. (1) CPU: A 32 x 8-bit register file with single-clock-cycle access feeds the ALU directly, eliminating accumulator bottleneck. The two-stage pipeline fetches the next instruction while executing the current one. (2) Memory: Harvard architecture with separate Flash (128KB program) and SRAM (4KB data) buses. The EEPROM (4KB) is accessed via dedicated I/O registers with interrupt-flag polling for write completion. (3) I/O Ports: 53 I/O pins organized into 7 ports (A-G), each configurable as input with optional pull-up or output. Alternate function mapping routes USART, SPI, TWI, timer, and ADC signals to specific pins. (4) ISP/JTAG: The Flash can be programmed in-system via SPI (ISP) or JTAG interface. JTAG also supports boundary-scan testing and on-chip debugging.
