The AP1509-K5G-13 from Diodes Incorporated is a 150kHz, 2A PWM step-down DC/DC converter with 5V fixed output in an SOIC-8 package. The device is a monolithic IC designed for step-down voltage conversion, integrating the power switching transistor on-chip to save board space and reduce component count. The 150kHz fixed switching frequency allows the use of smaller external inductor and capacitor values compared to lower-frequency switching regulators, reducing overall solution size and cost. The 5V fixed output version provides +/-4% output voltage tolerance over the full input voltage, output current, and temperature range. The wide 4.5V to 22V input voltage range supports operation from various unregulated DC sources including 5V, 9V, 12V, and 24V rails. Internal compensation eliminates the need for external loop compensation components, simplifying the design. Protection features include thermal shutdown to prevent over-temperature damage and current limit protection against output overload conditions. When current limit is active and the feedback voltage drops below 0.5V, the switching frequency is reduced to limit power dissipation. The logic-level ON/OFF pin enables shutdown mode for standby power management.

The AP1509-K5G-13 uses voltage-mode PWM control with an integrated NPN power switch. (1) Voltage-Mode PWM: The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage with an internal 1.23V reference. The error amplifier output controls the duty cycle of the PWM comparator, which sets the on-time of the integrated NPN switching transistor. (2) Power Stage: During the on-time, the internal NPN transistor conducts, connecting the input voltage to the output through the external inductor. The inductor current ramps up linearly, storing energy in the magnetic field. During the off-time, the NPN transistor turns off and the external Schottky diode (catch diode) provides a path for the inductor current, releasing the stored energy to the output. (3) 150kHz Oscillator: The internal oscillator generates a 150kHz sawtooth ramp that is compared with the error amplifier output to generate the PWM signal. The 150kHz frequency balances switching loss and component size. (4) Current Limit: When the switch current exceeds the limit (typically 2.5A), the on-time is terminated immediately. If VFB drops below 0.5V during current limit, the switching frequency is reduced by a factor of 5 to limit power dissipation in fault conditions. (5) Thermal Shutdown: When the junction temperature exceeds approximately 160C, the switching is disabled until the temperature drops by the hysteresis amount.
