The ADuM3160BRWZ-RL is an Analog Devices USB port isolator based on iCoupler technology, combining high-speed CMOS and monolithic air-core transformer technology. It provides 2500 V RMS isolation between upstream and downstream USB ports while maintaining USB 2.0 compliance at both low speed (1.5 Mbps) and full speed (12 Mbps). The device automatically detects data direction on a packet-by-packet basis and provides isolated control of the pull-up resistor for proper connection timing. High common-mode transient immunity (>25 kV/µs) ensures reliable operation in noisy industrial environments. The device is safety certified to UL 1577, CSA, VDE, and IEC 60950-1 standards.

The ADuM3160 operates as a transparent USB isolator with three subsystems: (1) The iCoupler isolation barrier uses edge-detection based data transfer across monolithic air-core transformers, providing 2500 V RMS galvanic isolation with >25 kV/µs common-mode transient immunity. (2) The direction detection logic monitors USB D+/D- lines on both sides to determine data flow direction on a packet-by-packet basis, enabling appropriate output buffers and disabling others to maintain USB protocol compliance. (3) The internal voltage regulators on each side regulate the VBUS supply (4.5-5.5V) to the 3.0-3.6V signaling level required by USB transceivers. The isolated pull-up resistor control allows the peripheral to manage connection timing. The low idle current (2.3 mA) eliminates the need for USB suspend state support.
