The ADUM3160BRWZ-RL is an Analog Devices USB digital isolator based on iCoupler magnetic isolation technology, providing 2500Vrms galvanic isolation for USB 2.0 full-speed (12Mbps) and low-speed (1.5Mbps) communication. Unlike general-purpose digital isolators, the ADuM3160 is specifically designed for USB D+/D- bidirectional signaling, automatically detecting data direction on a packet-by-packet basis. The SPU and SPD speed-select pins configure the upstream and downstream ports for full or low speed operation. The PIN pin provides isolated control of the upstream pull-up resistor for proper USB enumeration timing. The device operates from VBUS (4.5V to 5.5V) on each side and internally regulates to the required signal levels. The >25kV/us CMTI and VDE/UL/CSA safety certifications ensure reliable operation in industrial and medical environments. The -RL suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging. A 5kV reinforced insulation version (ADuM4160) is available for medical applications.

The ADuM3160 uses edge-detection based iCoupler technology with internal direction-detection logic to implement transparent USB isolation. The D+ and D- lines carry bidirectional USB signals that switch between driven and idle states. The internal logic monitors the bus state on both sides to determine the current data direction (upstream or downstream). When an edge is detected on the driving side, the corresponding iCoupler channel transmits the transition to the isolated side, which reproduces the edge on its D+/D- outputs. When the bus returns to idle (both D+ and D- driven by pull-up/pull-down resistors), the isolator tri-states its outputs and allows the passive termination to set the bus state. The speed select pins (SPU, SPD) configure the internal slew rate limiting and timing to match full-speed or low-speed USB specifications. The internal LDO regulators derive the signal-level supply from VBUS.
