The Texas Instruments ADS1119IPWR is a 16-bit delta-sigma ADC with 4 single-ended or 2 differential input channels, an I2C interface, and a wide 2.0V to 5.5V supply range. The device achieves 16-bit noise-free resolution at data rates up to 860 SPS, making it suitable for precision measurement of slowly varying signals such as temperature, pressure, and strain gauge outputs. The integrated programmable gain amplifier (PGA) offers gains of 1x, 4x, 8x, and 16x, enabling direct measurement of small signals without external amplification—gain of 16x allows measurement of signals as small as 256 uV with 16-bit resolution. The internal 2.048V reference eliminates the need for an external precision reference, reducing BOM count and PCB area. The I2C interface supports standard (100 kHz), fast (400 kHz), and high-speed (3.4 MHz) modes, providing flexible connectivity to any microcontroller. The device includes an integrated temperature sensor for system-level monitoring. Power consumption is only 280 uA in continuous conversion mode and 0.5 uA in power-down mode, supporting battery-operated data logging applications.

The ADS1119 uses a second-order delta-sigma modulator operating at an oversampling ratio (OSR) determined by the selected data rate. At 860 SPS (lowest OSR), the modulator produces 1-bit output at a high clock rate, which is then filtered by a digital sinc3 filter to produce the 16-bit output word. At lower data rates (20, 90, 330, 860 SPS selectable), the higher OSR provides more effective noise filtering, resulting in lower noise and higher effective resolution. The 4-channel input multiplexer routes the selected input pair to the PGA, which amplifies the differential signal by the programmed gain (1x to 16x). The internal 2.048V reference sets the full-scale range to ±2.048V/gain. The I2C interface provides read/write access to the configuration register (selecting channel, gain, data rate, and operating mode) and the conversion data register. A dedicated RDY pin (optional) signals when new conversion data is available, enabling interrupt-driven data acquisition without I2C polling.
