The AD780ARZ-REEL7 from Analog Devices is an ultrahigh precision bandgap voltage reference providing pin-programmable 2.5V or 3.0V output in a SOIC-8 tape-and-reel package. The device accepts input voltages from 4.0V to 36V and delivers a stable reference with 3ppm/C maximum temperature drift (B grade) and +/-1mV maximum initial accuracy. The 100nV/sqrtHz output noise makes it ideal for high-resolution ADC and DAC applications where reference noise directly limits converter performance. A unique low-headroom design enables 3.0V output from a 5V +/-10% supply, providing 20% more ADC dynamic range compared to 2.5V references. The AD780 can source or sink up to 10mA and operates in both series and shunt modes, enabling positive or negative reference voltages without external components. A temperature output pin provides a voltage proportional to temperature for simultaneous temperature measurement. The device is stable with any load capacitance when a 1uF bypass capacitor is used.

The AD780ARZ-REEL7 uses a precision bandgap reference with laser-trimmed resistors. (1) Bandgap Core: Two NPN transistors (Q6, Q7) with 12:1 emitter area ratio generate a PTAT (proportional to absolute temperature) voltage across resistor R5. This PTAT voltage, combined with the VBE of Q7 (which has a negative temperature coefficient), produces a temperature-stable bandgap voltage Vbg. (2) Output Programming: The output voltage is set to 2.5V or 3.0V by connecting the O/P SELECT pin (pin 8) to GND for 3.0V or leaving it unconnected for 2.5V. Internal resistors R13-R15 are configured accordingly in the feedback loop. (3) Low Headroom: A unique amplifier design minimizes the required input-to-output voltage differential, enabling 3.0V output from inputs as low as 4.5V. (4) Temperature Output: The PTAT voltage drives a buffer that outputs approximately 500mV at 25C with a 2mV/C slope, enabling temperature sensing without additional components. (5) Noise Reduction: External capacitors on the NR pin can further reduce output noise below the already low 100nV/sqrtHz. (6) Shunt Mode: By connecting VIN to VOUT, the device operates as a 2-terminal shunt regulator, providing +/-2.5V or +/-3.0V references.
