The AM29F040B-90EF is a 4Mbit (512K x 8-bit) 5V-only Flash memory device originally designed by AMD. It features 90ns access time and a sector erase architecture with 8 individually erasable 64KB sectors, allowing selective firmware updates without erasing the entire chip. The device operates from a single 5V supply for both read and write operations, eliminating the need for external high-voltage programming circuitry. The JEDEC-standard command set ensures compatibility with a wide range of programmers and in-system programming tools. The 32-pin PLCC package is through-hole mountable, making it suitable for legacy industrial and embedded designs. This part is now produced by multiple second-source manufacturers.

The AM29F040B uses a NOR-type Flash architecture where each memory cell consists of a floating-gate transistor. Reading is performed by applying 5V and accessing the cell through the address bus — the stored charge on the floating gate determines the transistor threshold and thus the stored data. Programming (writing a ‘0’) uses the CHE (Channel Hot Electron) mechanism: a high gate voltage and moderate drain voltage inject electrons onto the floating gate. Erasing (writing ‘1’ to all bytes in a sector) uses Fowler-Nordheim tunneling: a high voltage on the source terminal removes electrons from the floating gate. The embedded algorithms automatically generate the required timing and voltage sequences — the host simply issues command sequences and polls the status bits. The sector architecture allows individual 64KB sectors to be erased without affecting other sectors, enabling field firmware updates of specific code modules.
