The ADUM1410ARWZ from Analog Devices is a quad-channel digital isolator based on iCoupler technology that replaces optocouplers with superior performance and reliability. It provides 3750VRMS galvanic isolation with up to 1Mbps data rate per channel. Unlike optocouplers, iCoupler devices use chip-scale air-core transformers for magnetic coupling, eliminating the LED degradation and uncertain current transfer ratio problems. The device consumes 1/10 to 1/6 the power of equivalent optocouplers. Independent 2.7V to 5.5V supplies on each side enable voltage level translation across the isolation barrier. A patented refresh circuit ensures DC correctness even without input transitions. The CTRL pin defines the output default state when input power is lost. The ADUM1410 has all 4 channels in the same direction, making it ideal for SPI isolation (4 signals: CLK, CS, MOSI, MISO can be covered with one device plus one reverse channel).

The ADUM1410ARWZ uses Analog Devices’ iCoupler technology, which integrates high-speed CMOS with monolithic air-core micro-transformers fabricated on a single chip. Each channel consists of a transmitter circuit on one side of the isolation barrier and a receiver circuit on the other. The transmitter encodes the input logic state into a series of high-frequency pulses that are magnetically coupled across the isolation barrier through the on-chip transformer. The receiver decodes the pulses and reproduces the original logic state. When the input is static (no transitions), a refresh circuit periodically sends update pulses to ensure the output remains in the correct state, solving the DC correctness problem that affects simple pulse transformers. If the input side loses power, the receiver detects the absence of refresh pulses and forces the output to the default state determined by the CTRL pin. The magnetic coupling through air-core transformers provides 3750VRMS isolation (verified by UL 1577 testing) and >25kV/µs common-mode transient immunity because the transformer is inherently immune to common-mode electric fields.
