The AD680ARZ-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a low-cost 2.5V bandgap voltage reference providing a stable 2.500V output from a 4.5V to 36V supply. The device features +/-10mV initial accuracy (+/-0.4%), 30ppm/C typical temperature coefficient, and 60uV p-p noise from 0.1Hz to 10Hz. The bandgap architecture uses a silicon bandgap cell with curvature correction to achieve low temperature drift. The output can source and sink up to 10mA, suitable for driving ADC reference inputs and resistive loads. The 1.25mA supply current is relatively low for a bandgap reference. The REEL7 suffix indicates 1000-piece tape and reel packaging. The AD680 is a cost-effective choice for 8-bit and 10-bit data converter reference applications where the highest precision is not required.

The AD680ARZ-REEL7 uses a bandgap voltage reference architecture. (1) Bandgap Principle: The reference generates a voltage equal to the silicon bandgap voltage (approximately 1.22V) by combining a PTAT (Proportional To Absolute Temperature) voltage with a CTAT (Complementary To Absolute Temperature) voltage from a forward-biased diode. When properly weighted, the temperature coefficients cancel at the bandgap voltage, producing a temperature-stable reference. (2) 2.5V Output: The internal 1.22V bandgap voltage is amplified by a precision op-amp with internal resistors to produce the 2.5V output. The resistor ratio determines the output voltage and is trimmed during manufacturing for +/-0.4% accuracy. (3) Curvature Correction: A second-order correction circuit compensates for residual nonlinearity in the diode voltage versus temperature, reducing the temperature coefficient to 30ppm/C typical. (4) Output Buffer: The internal op-amp buffers the reference voltage, providing low output impedance and the ability to drive +/-10mA loads with 0.02%/mA load regulation.
