The Analog Devices AD5421BREZ is a complete, loop-powered, 4mA to 20mA digital-to-analog converter designed for smart transmitter manufacturers in the industrial control industry. It provides a high-precision, fully integrated, low-cost solution in a compact 28-lead TSSOP package. The AD5421 includes a regulated voltage output that powers itself and other transmitter devices, providing 1.8V to 12V regulated output. Built-in 1.22V and 2.5V references eliminate the need for discrete regulators and voltage references. The device supports HART FSK protocol communication without performance degradation. The SPI-compatible serial interface operates at up to 30MHz for fast data transfers. With 0.0015% typical INL and 0.0006% typical gain error, the AD5421 delivers exceptional accuracy for demanding process control applications.

The AD5421 operates as a loop-powered DAC with four key subsystems: 1) 16-Bit DAC Core: The R-2R ladder network converts the digital input code into an analog current that drives the loop output through a precision output amplifier. The DAC guarantees 16-bit monotonicity with INL of 0.0035% FSR maximum (B/C grade). 2) Voltage Regulator: An integrated regulator provides 1.8V to 12V output from the loop supply, powering the AD5421 and external circuitry. The regulated output is selectable via REG_SEL pins. 3) Reference System: On-chip 1.22V and 2.5V bandgap references with 4ppm/°C maximum temperature coefficient ensure stable output accuracy. An external reference can also be used for higher precision. 4) Loop Interface: The device connects in series with the 4-20mA current loop, regulating the loop current based on the DAC code. The slew rate control function limits the rate of loop current change, and NAMUR-compliant alarm currents provide fault indication.
