The A3950SLPTR-T from Allegro MicroSystems is a full-bridge PWM motor driver in a TSSOP-16 package. The device integrates four N-channel DMOS transistors in an H-bridge configuration, rated for 30V supply and 2A continuous output current per bridge. The 0.4 Ohm total RDS(on) (high-side plus low-side) minimizes conduction losses at high currents. Internal PWM fixed off-time current regulation controls the motor winding current through an external sense resistor, with programmable blanking time to prevent false current trips during switching transients. The device supports microstepping up to 1/8 step by modulating the PWM duty cycle to regulate the winding current to intermediate levels between full steps, providing smooth and quiet motor operation. The input interface supports both phase/enable mode (2-bit direction and enable) and direct PWM mode for maximum flexibility. Protection features include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout, and crossover current protection. The TSSOP-16 package with exposed thermal pad provides adequate power dissipation for the 2A continuous rating.

The A3950SLPTR-T uses DMOS H-bridge output stages with internal PWM current regulation for microstepping. (1) H-Bridge: Four N-channel DMOS transistors in an H configuration drive current through the motor winding in both directions. The 0.4 Ohm total RDS(on) keeps conduction losses low at 2A. (2) PWM Current Control: An external sense resistor in the ground return measures the winding current. When the current exceeds the trip point (set by sense resistor and reference voltage), the bridge enters the off-time phase where the current decays through a recirculation path. After the fixed off-time, the bridge re-energizes and the cycle repeats. (3) Microstepping: The internal DAC sets the current trip point to intermediate levels corresponding to the desired microstep position. The DAC output follows a sinusoidal pattern across the full step cycle, producing smooth current transitions. (4) Decay Mode: During the off-time, the current decays through either fast decay (opposite FET pair on) or slow decay (same low-side FET on) paths. The device supports selectable decay modes for optimal microstepping performance.
