The TIP42C from onsemi is a PNP silicon power transistor rated at -100V and -6A. With hFE of 15-75 and 65W power dissipation in TO-220, it is the standard PNP power transistor for audio amplifiers and high-current switching, complement to the TIP41C NPN transistor.

The TIP42C from onsemi is a PNP silicon power transistor in a TO-220 package rated at -100V and -6A continuous collector current. With 65W power dissipation, it is suitable for audio amplifier output stages and power switching applications. The hFE of 15-75 at -300mA indicates moderate gain, typical of power transistors; Darlington configurations or higher base drive current are needed for high-current switching. The TIP42C is the direct complement to the TIP41C NPN transistor, enabling push-pull amplifier and H-bridge motor driver circuits. The -100V rating provides adequate margin for split +/-40V audio amplifier supplies. For higher gain, the TIP142/TIP147 Darlington pairs offer hFE > 1000 at similar current ratings.

The TIP42C is a silicon PNP epitaxial-base power transistor. Current flows from emitter to collector, controlled by base current flowing out of the base. The base-emitter junction requires approximately -0.65V forward bias (emitter more positive than base). For saturation at -3A collector current with hFE(min)=15, the required base current is 3A/15 = 200mA. In push-pull audio amplifiers, the TIP41C (NPN) conducts during the positive output half-cycle and the TIP42C (PNP) conducts during the negative half-cycle. Bias circuits set the quiescent current to eliminate crossover distortion. The TO-220 package tab is connected to the collector, requiring an insulating washer when mounting to a grounded heatsink.
