The TIP31C from onsemi is a medium-power NPN transistor in a TO-220 package, rated at 100V VCEO and 3A IC with 40W dissipation capability. As part of the TIP31/TIP32 complementary series, it pairs with the TIP32C PNP for push-pull amplifier output stages. The hFE classification ranges from 10-50 at 1A, making it suitable for applications where moderate gain is acceptable. The TO-220 package enables easy heatsink mounting for thermal management. The TIP31C is the 100V version; lower voltage variants include TIP31A (60V) and TIP31B (80V).

The TIP31C uses a triple-diffused NPN structure optimized for power handling. The epitaxial collector region provides high breakdown voltage, while the heavily doped emitter ensures adequate current gain. In linear operation, the transistor operates in the active region where collector current is proportional to base current (multiplied by hFE). For switching, the device is driven into saturation with base current exceeding IC/hFE, resulting in VCE(sat) of approximately 1.2V at 3A. The relatively low transition frequency of 3MHz limits its use in high-frequency applications but is adequate for audio and general power switching.
