The MT25QL256ABA8ESF-0SIT from Micron Technology is a 256Mb (32MB) 1.8V SPI NOR Flash memory in a VDFPN-8 (5x6mm) package. Supporting standard SPI, Dual I/O, and Quad I/O modes at up to 133MHz clock frequency, the device provides effective bandwidth up to 532Mbps for fast code shadowing and execute-in-place (XIP) operation. The memory is organized into 512 sectors of 64KB each, with 4KB sub-sector erase capability. Advanced security features include volatile and non-volatile protect bits, one-time programmable (OTP) area, and password protection. Endurance is 100,000 erase cycles per sector with 20-year data retention at 85C.

The MT25QL256ABA8ESF-0SIT uses Micron’s 45nm NOR Flash technology. (1) SPI Interface: The serial peripheral interface uses CS, CLK, DI, and DO pins. In Quad I/O mode, all four data pins become bidirectional I/O (IO0-IO3), quadrupling the data transfer rate. (2) Command Protocol: The host sends an 8-bit command byte followed by 24-bit address and optional mode bits. In Quad mode, address and data are transferred on all four pins simultaneously. (3) XIP: Execute-in-place mode allows the MCU to directly execute code from the Flash without first copying to RAM, using the fast Quad I/O read with continuous read mode bits that eliminate command overhead on sequential accesses. (4) Erase: Supports 4KB sub-sector, 32KB half-block, 64KB block, and full-chip erase. Typical sector erase time is 200ms. (5) Program: 256-byte page program in 0.8ms typical.
