The MAX1501ETE+T from Maxim Integrated (now Analog Devices) is a highly integrated linear battery charger with thermal regulation for portable applications. It supports stand-alone single-cell Li+ charging with CC-CV (constant current / constant voltage) termination, and microprocessor-controlled 3-cell NiMH/NiCd charging with -deltaV and dT/dt termination. The integrated power FET eliminates the need for an external MOSFET, reverse-blocking diode, and current-sense resistor, minimizing external component count. The fast-charge current is programmable up to 1.4A via an external resistor. Proprietary die temperature regulation limits the charge current when the die temperature reaches one of three programmable thresholds (+95C, +115C, or +135C), preventing thermal runaway without stopping the charge entirely. Input overvoltage lockout (OVLO) protects the device when the input exceeds 6.5V. Three LED status outputs indicate charging, full, and fault conditions. The charge-current monitor output provides a voltage proportional to the charge current for fuel gauging.

The MAX1501ETE+T operates as a linear battery charger with integrated thermal management. (1) Li+ Mode: The charger applies constant current (CC) until the battery voltage reaches the 4.2V regulation voltage, then transitions to constant voltage (CV) mode. The current tapers as the battery approaches full charge. When the current drops below the programmable top-off threshold (10%, 20%, or 30% of fast-charge current), charging terminates. (2) NiMH Mode: Under microprocessor control, the charger applies constant current and monitors for -deltaV termination. Temperature and timer-based backup termination ensures safety. (3) Thermal Regulation: When the die temperature reaches the programmed threshold (95/115/135C), the charge current is automatically reduced to prevent further temperature rise. This allows maximum charge rate without thermal shutdown, maintaining some charge current even in high-ambient-temperature conditions. (4) OVLO: When VIN exceeds 6.5V, the charger is disabled to protect against adapter faults. (5) Digital Soft-Start: On power-up, the charge current ramps gradually to limit inrush current and output overshoot.
