The LT1617ES5#TRPBF is an Analog Devices (formerly Linear Technology) micropower inverting DC/DC converter in a 5-lead TSOT-23 package. The device generates negative output voltages from positive inputs, producing outputs as low as -34V from a 1.2V to 15V input without transformers. The 350mA internal switch current limit and 36V switch voltage rating support a wide range of output voltage and current combinations. The constant off-time control scheme with 400ns fixed off-time conserves operating current across the load range, achieving high efficiency at both light and heavy loads. The 20uA no-load quiescent current and 0.5uA shutdown current minimize battery drain in portable applications. The 250mV VCESAT at 300mA ensures high efficiency by minimizing switch conduction losses. The compact TSOT-23-5 package and the 400ns off-time allow the use of tiny surface-mount inductors and capacitors, minimizing solution footprint for space-constrained handheld devices. The TRPBF suffix indicates tape-and-reel with lead-free finish. The LT1617-1 variant provides a 100mA current limit for lower-power applications. Packaged in TSOT-23-5 rated for -40C to +85C.

The LT1617 uses a constant off-time, current-limited control scheme. When the output voltage is below the regulation threshold (NFB pin below -1.23V), the internal 350mA NPN power switch (Q3) turns on, ramping up the inductor current. When the switch current reaches 350mA, the current comparator trips and the one-shot turns off Q3 for a fixed 400ns. During the off-time, the inductor current flows through the external Schottky diode to the output capacitor, delivering energy to the load. This on-off cycling continues until the output voltage reaches regulation, at which point the feedback comparator disables the internal circuitry until the output drops again. The constant off-time control inherently limits the maximum duty cycle and provides a well-defined switching frequency that varies with input and output voltage. The negative feedback (NFB) pin senses the output voltage through an external resistor divider, with the internal reference at -1.23V. The SHDN pin disables the converter and reduces IQ to 0.5uA. For inverting topologies, the switch sees VIN + |VOUT|, so the 36V switch rating limits the total of input plus output magnitude.
