The LM358N/NOPB from Texas Instruments consists of two independent, high-gain, internally frequency-compensated operational amplifiers designed specifically to operate from a single power supply over a wide range of voltages. The device can also operate from split supplies, but the single-supply operation with common-mode input range that includes ground is its distinguishing feature. The LM358 is one of the most widely used general-purpose op-amps in the industry, suitable for transducer amplifiers, DC gain blocks, and conventional op-amp circuits that can be implemented with a single supply. The 8-PDIP through-hole package is ideal for prototyping and educational use. The /NOPB suffix indicates lead-free packaging.

The LM358N/NOPB is a dual bipolar operational amplifier. (1) Differential Input Stage: The input stage uses a PNP differential pair that allows the common-mode input range to extend down to ground (0V), enabling true single-supply operation. The input bias current flows out of the input pins (PNP structure) at approximately 45nA. (2) Gain Stage: The high-voltage gain stage provides the open-loop gain of approximately 100dB. Internal compensation (30pF capacitor) ensures stability in voltage-follower configurations without external components. (3) Output Stage: The class-AB output stage can sink and source current, but the output swing only goes to within approximately 1.5V of the positive rail. The output can sink up to 20mA and source up to 40mA. (4) Single-Supply: The ground-referenced input and ability to operate at 3V make the LM358 ideal for single-supply applications where the signal swings between ground and the positive rail.
