The LM358 from Texas Instruments is the industry’s most widely used dual general-purpose operational amplifier, with over 40 years of continuous production since its introduction in 1976. The key innovation is the input common-mode voltage range that includes ground (the negative supply rail), which eliminates the need for external biasing components in single-supply applications. The device operates from a single 3V to 32V supply or dual ±1.5V to ±16V supplies, drawing only 0.7mA quiescent current for both amplifiers regardless of supply voltage magnitude. The LM358 is equivalent to one-half of the LM324 quad op-amp, sharing the same input and output characteristics. The B and BA versions offer improved performance including 1.2MHz GBW, 3mV/2mV max offset voltage, 300µA/ch supply current, and integrated EMI/RFI filters. Available in PDIP-8, SOIC-8, TSSOP-8, VSSOP-8, and SOT-23-8 packages.

The LM358 uses a bipolar input stage with PNP transistors that allow the input common-mode range to extend down to and below the negative supply rail (ground in single-supply operation). This is achieved because the PNP input transistors are biased from the positive supply, and their emitters can swing to within a few hundred millivolts below ground while still maintaining collector current. The input stage feeds a differential-to-single-ended converter, followed by a high-gain voltage amplifier stage with an internal 30pF compensation capacitor that ensures stability at unity gain. The output stage is a Class-AB push-pull with current limiting and short-circuit protection. The output can swing to within approximately 1.5V of the positive rail (due to the VCE(sat) of the upper output transistor) and down to within a few millivolts of ground (through the 50µA current sink). The 0.7MHz gain-bandwidth product limits the useful closed-loop bandwidth at higher gains, but is sufficient for DC and low-frequency signal conditioning applications.

The LM358 is used as a transducer amplifier where the ground-referenced input allows direct amplification of sensor signals (thermistors, photodiodes, strain gauges) without an offset reference. In current-sensing applications, the non-inverting input is connected to a shunt resistor near ground, and the amplifier measures the small voltage drop across it. For active filters in audio and instrumentation, two amplifiers implement a 2nd-order Sallen-Key or multiple-feedback filter stage. As a window comparator, one amplifier detects the upper threshold and the other the lower threshold, with their open-collector-style outputs combined to generate an out-of-range signal. In battery-powered devices, the 0.7mA supply current and 3V minimum supply voltage enable operation from a single lithium cell.
