The LF444CMX/NOPB from Texas Instruments is a quad low-power JFET-input operational amplifier in a SOIC-14 package. The LF444 provides many of the same AC characteristics as the industry-standard LM148 while greatly improving the DC characteristics and reducing power consumption to one-fourth that of the LM148. The amplifier has the same 1MHz gain bandwidth, 1V/us slew rate, and gain (10kOhm load) as the LM148, but draws only 200uA maximum supply current per amplifier compared to the LM148s approximately 800uA. The well-matched high-voltage JFET input devices reduce the input bias and offset currents by a factor of 10,000 over the LM148, providing 50pA maximum input bias current and 10^12 Ohm input impedance. The LF444 also has very low equivalent input noise voltage of 35nV/sqrtHz for a low-power amplifier. The device is pin compatible with the LM148, allowing an immediate 4x reduction in power drain in many applications. The LF444A grade provides tighter offset voltage (5mV max vs 10mV) and wider supply voltage range (+/-22V vs +/-18V).

The LF444CMX/NOPB uses a BI-FET (Bipolar-FET) process combining JFET input devices with bipolar output circuitry. (1) JFET Input Stage: Each amplifier uses a matched pair of P-channel JFETs at the input, providing the ultra-low 50pA input bias current and 10^12 Ohm input impedance. The JFET input pair also provides low noise operation at 35nV/sqrtHz. (2) Bipolar Gain and Output Stage: The bipolar transistors following the JFET input stage provide the voltage gain and output drive capability. The output stage can swing to within approximately 2V of each supply rail. (3) Low Power Design: The operating current of each amplifier is set to approximately 150uA by internal current sources, compared to about 600uA per amplifier in the LM148. Despite the lower current, the 1MHz GBW is maintained by the high transconductance of the JFET input pair. (4) Pin Compatibility: The internal circuit topology is designed to be pin-compatible with the LM148, with the same pinout for inverting input, non-inverting input, output, and power supply connections.
