The XTR111AIDGQR from Texas Instruments is a precision voltage-to-current converter/transmitter designed for standard 0-20mA or 4-20mA analog current loop signals, sourcing up to 32mA. The suffix AIDGQR decodes as: A=HVSSOP-10 (DGQ) package, I=industrial temperature range (-40 to +125C), DGQ=HVSSOP-10 with PowerPAD, R=tape and reel. The ratio between input voltage and output current is set by a single external resistor RSET. An external P-MOSFET provides high output resistance and wide compliance voltage range. The integrated 3-15V adjustable subregulator powers additional circuitry such as sensor signal conditioning.

The XTR111 operates through four subsystems: (1) Voltage-to-Current Conversion: The input voltage (VIN) applied across the SET pin resistor (RSET) generates a current ISET = VIN/RSET. This current is internally amplified and mirrored to the output, producing IOUT = 10 x VIN/RSET. For a 4-20mA output with 0-5V input: RSET = 10 x 5V/20mA = 2.5kOhm. (2) External P-MOSFET: An external P-MOSFET (not included) provides the actual current sourcing capability and high output resistance. The XTR111 drives the MOSFET gate to regulate the loop current. This allows the output compliance voltage to extend from VVSP-2V to well below ground. (3) Subregulator: An adjustable 3-15V linear regulator output (REGS pin) provides power for external circuitry. The output voltage is set by an external resistor divider. (4) Error Flag: The EF pin (open-drain) pulls low when the output cannot maintain regulation (e.g., open loop, compliance exceeded), providing real-time fault detection.
