The TPS82140SILR from Texas Instruments is a complete 2A step-down DC/DC converter in an ultra-small MicroSiP (Micro System-in-Package) module that integrates the switching regulator IC and the inductor into a single 2.8 x 2.9 x 1.5mm BGA package. This integration eliminates the most difficult aspect of buck converter design – inductor selection and layout – and reduces the total solution to just the module plus two external capacitors (input and output). The device operates from a 3V to 17V input and produces an adjustable output from 0.9V to 6V at up to 2A continuous load current. The DCS-Control (Direct Control with Seamless transition) topology provides fast transient response and seamless transition between PWM mode (for heavy loads) and PFM mode (for light loads), maintaining high efficiency across the entire load range. In PFM mode, the quiescent current is only 17uA, making the device ideal for battery-powered applications that spend significant time in sleep or standby modes. The 2MHz fixed switching frequency keeps the output voltage ripple low and enables smaller external capacitors. The integrated 0.47uH inductor is optimized for the converter’s operating range and eliminates the risk of inductor saturation or poor performance due to incorrect inductor selection. The TPS82140 is pin-compatible with other TPS821xx modules offering different current ratings (TPS82130 for 1A, TPS82150 for 1.5A).

The TPS82140SILR operates as a synchronous buck converter using TI’s DCS-Control topology. Key subsystems include: (1) DCS-Control – a proprietary control scheme that combines voltage-mode control with direct feedforward of input and output voltage for fast transient response; in steady-state PWM mode, the device operates at 2MHz fixed frequency; when the load decreases below the PFM threshold, the device transitions seamlessly to PFM (pulse frequency modulation) mode, skipping pulses to maintain high efficiency at light loads; the transition is seamless without output voltage disturbance; (2) Integrated Power Stage – the module includes the high-side and low-side MOSFET switches and the 0.47uH inductor on a single substrate; the inductor is a thin-film type with low DCR and controlled parasitic characteristics; (3) Feedback and Regulation – the FB pin connects to an external resistor divider setting the output voltage; the 0.8V +/-1% reference ensures accurate output regulation; (4) Soft-Start – an internal soft-start ramps the output voltage gradually to limit inrush current; (5) Protection – cycle-by-cycle current limit protects the integrated switches; thermal shutdown disables switching at approximately 155C junction; undervoltage lockout (UVLO) prevents operation below 2.7V input; the EN pin provides enable/disable control.
