The TPS54331DR from Texas Instruments is a 28V, 3A non-synchronous step-down converter with an integrated 80mOhm high-side MOSFET. Designed for ease of use, it features a fixed 570kHz switching frequency that minimizes external component size while maintaining good efficiency. The ECO-mode pulse-skipping feature automatically activates at light loads, significantly improving efficiency compared to continuous conduction mode operation. The device achieves a shutdown quiescent current of only 1uA, making it suitable for battery-powered applications where standby power consumption is critical. Internal slope compensation current-mode control simplifies loop compensation and allows the use of ceramic output capacitors. The adjustable slow start limits inrush current during startup, while programmable UVLO allows the input undervoltage lockout threshold to be set with a resistor divider. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit, frequency foldback during overload, and thermal shutdown. The TPS54331DR is available in an SOIC-8 package rated for -40 to 150 C junction temperature.

The TPS54331DR operates as a current-mode non-synchronous buck converter. Key subsystems include: (1) Current-Mode PWM Controller – compares the error amplifier output with the high-side switch current to determine duty cycle; internal slope compensation prevents sub-harmonic oscillation at duty cycles above 50%; (2) Integrated High-Side MOSFET – an 80mOhm N-channel MOSFET integrated on-die eliminates external switch selection; an external bootstrap capacitor provides gate drive voltage above VIN; (3) ECO-Mode – at light loads, the controller skips pulses to maintain output regulation while reducing switching losses; this discontinuous conduction mode significantly improves light-load efficiency; (4) Slow Start – an internal current source charges an external capacitor on the SS pin, gradually increasing the reference voltage to control output ramp-up and limit inrush current; (5) UVLO – a resistor divider from VIN to EN sets the turn-on and turn-off thresholds with built-in hysteresis; (6) Protection – cycle-by-cycle current limit protects the MOSFET; frequency foldback reduces switching frequency during severe overload; thermal shutdown disables the converter at approximately 160C junction.
