The TPS54318RTER from Texas Instruments is a full-featured 6V, 3A synchronous step-down current-mode converter with two integrated 30mOhm MOSFETs. The device enables small designs by integrating the power MOSFETs, implementing current-mode control to reduce external component count, and supporting up to 2MHz switching frequency to minimize inductor size. The 0.8V +/-1% voltage reference provides accurate regulation over the full -40 to 150 C junction temperature range. A 350uA typical operating quiescent current maximizes light-load efficiency, while the EN pin reduces shutdown current to 2uA. Features include adjustable soft start for controlled output ramp, power-good output with undervoltage/overvoltage thresholds, external clock synchronization, and safe start-up into prebiased outputs. The device is packaged in a thermally enhanced 3mm x 3mm WQFN-16 package.

The TPS54318RTER operates as a current-mode synchronous buck converter. Key subsystems include: (1) Current-Mode PWM Controller – compares the output of the voltage error amplifier with the high-side switch current to set the duty cycle; this provides inherent cycle-by-cycle current limiting and simplified loop compensation; (2) Integrated MOSFETs – a 30mOhm high-side NMOS switch and 30mOhm low-side NMOS synchronous rectifier are integrated on-die; (3) Bootstrap Circuit – an external bootstrap capacitor between BOOT and PH provides gate drive voltage above VIN for the high-side NMOS; (4) Error Amplifier – the COMP pin allows external Type-II or Type-III compensation networks; (5) Soft Start – an external capacitor on the SS/CLK pin programs the startup ramp time; (6) Power Good – an open-drain PWRGD output asserts when VOUT is within 93%-107% of the target; (7) Protection – cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal shutdown with frequency foldback, and undervoltage lockout.
