The TPS23880RTQR from Texas Instruments is a quad-port Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) controller compliant with IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 and Type 4 PoE standards. Supporting up to 90W per port with 4-pair power delivery, it enables the next generation of high-power PoE applications including 802.11ax access points, pan-tilt-zoom cameras, and smart building LED lighting. The device operates autonomously for detection, classification, and power management, or can be fully controlled via I2C. Integrated 100V MOSFET drivers, per-port current limiting, and a 12-bit ADC for voltage and current monitoring provide comprehensive power management in a compact 48-pin VQFN package.

The TPS23880RTQR manages four independent PoE ports through autonomous or I2C-controlled modes. In autonomous mode, the detection circuit applies a 2.7V-10.1V signature voltage and measures the PD signature impedance (24.9 kOhm) to detect a valid PD. Classification applies a classification voltage (15.5V-20.5V) and measures the PD class current to determine the power allocation. For 4-pair Type 3/4, both pairs are powered simultaneously with independent detection and classification. The integrated 100V gate drivers control external N-channel MOSFETs that switch the VPWR supply to each port. Current sensing uses external sense resistors with an internal amplifier, reported through the 12-bit ADC via I2C. Per-port disconnect detection monitors the maintain power signature (MPS).
