The TLP250 from Toshiba is an optically-isolated gate driver designed for IGBT and power MOSFET gate drive applications. It combines a GaAlAs infrared LED on the input side with an integrated photodetector and push-pull output stage on the output side, providing 2500Vrms electrical isolation between the control logic and the power stage. The ±1.5A peak output current is sufficient to directly drive medium-power IGBTs and MOSFETs up to approximately 600V/50A class without an external amplifier stage. The 0.5µs maximum propagation delay supports switching frequencies up to 25 kHz. The ±5000 V/µs common mode transient immunity ensures reliable operation in noisy inverter environments where high dv/dt switching transients are present. Note: This product has been announced EOL (End of Life) by Toshiba; TLP5772 or TLP5702 are recommended for new designs.

The TLP250 operates by converting an electrical input signal to light and back to an electrical output signal, providing galvanic isolation between input and output. When the input LED is forward-biased (IF > 5 mA threshold), it emits infrared light that is detected by the integrated photodetector on the output side. The photodetector includes a photo-diode and amplifier that drive the push-pull output stage. When the LED is on, the output stage sources current (VO = VCC) to charge the IGBT/MOSFET gate capacitance; when the LED is off, the output stage sinks current (VO = GND) to discharge the gate. The 0.1µF bypass capacitor between VCC (pin 8) and GND (pin 5) is mandatory for stable operation of the internal high-gain amplifier. The 2500Vrms isolation is achieved through the optically transparent but electrically insulating dielectric between the LED and the photodetector die within the DIP-8 package.

The TLP250 is used as an isolated low-side gate driver in half-bridge and full-bridge inverter circuits for motor drives and induction heating. In air conditioner inverters, it drives the compressor IGBT module with galvanic isolation from the microcontroller. For solar inverters, the 2500Vrms isolation provides the required safety barrier between the high-voltage DC bus and the control electronics. In SMPS applications, it drives the primary-side MOSFET with isolation from the secondary-side PWM controller. The ±5000 V/µs CMTI prevents false turn-on of the output stage during high dv/dt switching transients common in inverter circuits.
