The TCA9548APWR from Texas Instruments is an 8-channel I2C switch and multiplexer that enables a single I2C master to communicate with up to 8 independent I2C bus segments. The primary use case is when multiple I2C slave devices share the same I2C address (a common issue with sensors, EEPROMs, and other peripherals) – by connecting each device to a separate downstream channel, the master can select one channel at a time via I2C commands, avoiding address conflicts. The TCA9548A can also be used to isolate I2C bus segments with different voltage levels (each downstream channel can operate at a different voltage, as the TCA9548A has level-shifting capability), or to manage I2C bus capacitance by splitting a large bus into smaller segments. The device operates as an I2C slave itself with a configurable address (set by the A0-A2 pins, supporting up to 8 TCA9548A devices on the same master bus, for a total of 64 downstream channels). To select a downstream channel, the master writes to the TCA9548A’s control register via I2C, setting the corresponding channel bit(s). Multiple channels can be selected simultaneously if needed. The active-low RESET pin provides a hardware method to deselect all channels. The bidirectional pass-gate switches on each channel support I2C Fast Mode (400kHz) with minimal propagation delay and no signal distortion. The device operates from 1.65V to 5.5V and is available in a TSSOP-24 package.

The TCA9548APWR operates as an 8-channel I2C bus switch controlled via I2C.
