With a low forward voltage drop of 0.55V at 3A and fast switching, it is widely used as a catch diode in buck converters, reverse polarity protection, and freewheeling applications in space-constrained designs.

The SS34 is a 40V, 3A Schottky barrier rectifier diode in an SMA (DO-214AC) surface-mount package. It offers the same low-forward-voltage, fast-switching advantages of Schottky technology as the 1N5819, but with triple the current rating and a compact surface-mount footprint. The 0.55V forward voltage at 3A reduces power dissipation compared to silicon PN diodes (typically 1.0-1.2V), improving efficiency in power conversion circuits. The 80A surge current rating handles transient conditions robustly. The SMA package is the most popular SMD diode footprint, providing a good balance between current handling and board area. The SS34 is commonly used with buck converters like the LM2596 and MP1584.

The SS34 uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction. When forward-biased, majority carriers cross from N-type semiconductor into the metal with a low energy barrier, resulting in 0.55V forward drop at 3A. The absence of minority carrier storage means negligible reverse recovery time, enabling very fast switching. This makes Schottky diodes ideal for high-frequency switching applications where PN diode recovery losses would be prohibitive. The trade-off is higher reverse leakage current compared to PN junction diodes and lower maximum reverse voltage ratings.
